9/11 Volunteer Group Rebuilding Animal Rescue Barn

Barn, New York Says Thank You, Sniff Seattle Dog Walkers

Nearly ten years ago, cities across America stepped up to help New York City after the September 11 attacks. That generosity moved Jeff Parness to form New York Says Thank You, a foundation dedicated to redefining the anniversary of 9/11 by sending volunteers from New York around the country to rebuild communities hit by their own disasters.

Marking 10 years since the attacks, one of the projects planned this year is the rebuilding of a barn in Georgia that was hit by a tornado — a barn that was home to 65 rescue animals.

Parness tells CNN:

“There’s a very special woman that lives in the barn. Her name is Susan Littlejohn, and she cares for 65 rescue animals in the barn. She and two of her volunteers were feeding all 65 of the animals, and a tornado literally dropped down on the barn and the barn exploded.

Luckily, Susan and the volunteers were fine and all the animals were fine. But she lost everything. So this year, we’re going to bring about 300 volunteers from around the country and do a barn-raising in Ellijay, Georgia.”

Read the whole CNN story. It’s inspiring stuff. As the New York Says Thank You motto says: “What we do is about 9/12.”
