Our Dogs Get Lonelier Than We Think, New Book Says

Our dogs could be suffering from stress and loneliness when we’re apart from them — even if the couch pillows aren’t torn to pieces when we come home.

That’s what a new book says. Dr. John Bradshaw writes about separation distress in Dog Sense: How the New Science of Dog Behavior Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet.

Bradshaw has spent his career debunking some of the common bad dog advice we’ve all heard, while researching the understanding of dog behavior.

“Most dogs probably have stronger attachments to people than they do to other dogs,,” he says. “Which is pretty unusual for any species, apart from our own.”

One of Bradshaw’s main findings? “Most dogs do not like being left alone.”

The book sounds great! I’ve just read the excepts. But I’ll definitely be picking it up soon.

Saw this on their Twitter. So true! And not only that, you make your own life better.

Our pug, Parfait, came from a shelter (Seattle Pug Rescue). We consider ourselves the lucky ones to have met her!

Dodgers Fans Can Bring Their Dog To The Ol’ Ballgame

Dog-Friendly Baseball Games

Dog-friendly MLB games are becoming more common (Photo by MissChatter/Flickr)

Los Angeles Dodgers fans can bring their dog to the game this Saturday. Around 15 or so Major League Baseball teams have “Bark at the Park” promotions this season.

The Seattle Mariners aren’t on that list. But with Seattle being one of the dog-friendliest and dog-lovingest cities around, I’m thinkin’ fans will be howling for their own dog-day at Safeco Field soon enough!

The way it’s been handled in other cities, your dog has to have I.D. tags and proof of vaccinations, and a separate admission ticket (about 30 bucks). Special dog sections have been designated at the stadiums for the promotions.

The sports statistics guy in me is wondering if each pup at the game counts in the final attendance tally. Hey, they bought a ticket!

Billboard Asks Ashton Kutcher And Demi Moore To Tweet About Puppy Mill Conditions

24 May

Ashton Kutcher (7,000,000) and Demi Moore (3,600,000) have over 10 million followers on Twitter between the two of them. That’s a lot of “twefluence” — a massive “twaudience.”

(Yeah, those Twitter plays-on-words are pretty shaky. Back to the “twawing board.”)

So, recognizing the opportunity to reach a lot of people, Mine Line Animal Rescue from Philadelphia has bought a Billboard at the corner of Lankershim and Moorpark in Los Angeles to convince the celebrity couple to tweet to their followers about the plight of dogs being raised in puppy mills in the U.S.

The billboard reads: “Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore please tweet all your followers and tell them about puppy mills. The dogs desperately need your help.”

The billboard also includes a website address, www.dogsinacage.com. On that site, MLAR explains a little more fully why they decided to ask Kutcher and Moore for their help.

“Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore – please Tweet your followers and tell them about puppy mills. Ask them to visit this site or any website explaining the horrors of factory farming man’s best friend. We’re asking you for your help for several reasons 1) because we heard you have five rescued dogs, 2) you are both on the Top Ten list of celebrities on Twitter and have huge followings, and 3) you seem like nice people with strong social consciences and obviously want to make the world a better place.

No tweets (yet) from Ashton or Demi. But word is, if they agree to tweet about puppy mills and the benefits of adopting a shelter pet, MLAR will donate $5,000 to the couple’s foundation, which combats human trafficking.

Woodland Park Zoo Facebook Friends Name Python Snake ‘Kaa’

23 May

That's a hundred pounds of snake! (Photo Ryan Hawk/Woodland Park Zoo)

“Kaa.” Like the snake in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. That’s the name of Woodland Park Zoo’s new reticulated python.

The zoo asked their Facebook friends to submit names for the snake — then picked five of those submissions for people to vote on. Kaa got 44% of the votes, beating Sundara, Java, Rimbo, and Pogi.

We love going to the zoo. So I’m sure we’ll be seeing Kaa soon!
